So I was sitting there in my studio before a 6 foot by 8 foot window which was thrown open, I was chatting with a friend. In flies this pretty large bug and it landed in my hair! As a reflex I swatted it away and the poor thing tumbled to the desktop.. I don't know if I broke the things antennae or if it showed up that way.. it was on it's back, trying to flip over so seeing it was not a wasp or other thing that can kill me I helped it right itself and was amazed at the design of the things body! This should be called a cat bug for it seems to have a cats head with bulging black eyes and the antennae are placed so they might be whiskers. It hung around a while... then vanished and later turned up on my back! This time I tossed it out the window and thankfully it started to fly just as a bug should fly.. off to greener pastures I hope.

Hmmm...yep, that's a click beetle! It's a male, which you can determine by the antennae and the size of those eye spots. The reason they're called a "click" beetle is because their thoracic-abdominal junction can hinge - they tense up, bending their thorax down a little, and then snap back with a very audible click!

Supposedly, they use that trick to escape predators, and believe me, it works! They've been in between my fingers before, and snapped so hard they flew out! They're very tough beetles! And yes, their design is perfectly made, and nothing short of amazing ^/_\^

I was just thinking the same thing. I've seen tons of click beetles this summer and had a friend remark about how much of a nerd I was because I could recognize a click beetle when I saw one.

Interesting camouflage and I'm certain this is to scare away likely predators from what appears to be a head large enough to eat them.
