Pear shaped torso

Everybody likes a 'quickie', yes? This small carving is just that, a pear tree was felled in last years big storm, the wood was offered to me from a firewood pile. I took several chunks and this is the first to see light. The idea is to make a pun as the wood itself is 'pear wood'. I love to carve female torsos because I can enjoy all the girl in it without having to get bogged down in her personality! The 'details' are kept to a minimum. By default almost you end up with a fertility type object.

Here an axe split off a flat from the round, it was clamped in a vise and then a chainsaw was used to start the roughing. It may seem odd to use a chainsaw to rough out a hand sized carving but it works so long as it is held fast. Next comes the grinder with wood cutting head. After, the part of the wood in the vise is cut free and then holding it in the hand a chisel deepened the forms. Finally it was rasp-ed over and sanded smooth before finishing in tung oil.
